Born October 13, 1921 in the province of Piyagi, Naoshi Kanno graduated from the Military Academy of Etajima in December 1941 (Class 70) and then begins his training to finally get his wings in September 1943. The first experience of combat Kanno held in April 1944 when he joined the Micronesia as a divisional officer of 343rd Air Group (Kokutai) He remained with the unit until July 10, 1944 when the unit was disbanded because of huge losses it has suffered. He was then transferred to Squadron 306, 201st Air Group (Kokutai) obtaining considerable experience in improving its array of hunting an equally significant.
One of his favorite tactics is to attack the front groups of B-24 that are sent by the USAF to attack the island of Yap. While perfecting his tactics, he struck one day a Liberator but managed to escape safely. The unit manages to kill more than 60 bombers during the month of July which earned him a citation.
In October 1944, the body is constituted Kamikaze Philippines , and Kanno is proposed to take commad unit. Finally this position is assigned to Lt Yukio Seki (another graduate of the Naval Academy) while Kanno is in Japan at the same time to collect aircraft to resupply the size of his unit.
When the 343rd Air Group (Kokutai) is reactivated to ensure the defense of Japanese territory , Kanno was given command of the 301st Squadron. The unit is now equipped with "George" and it brings together the elite of Japanese fighter pilots (like the JV 44 in Germany) At his baptism of fire, March 19, 1945, the Group intercepts training Hellcat came to destroy the aircraft for kamikaze operations. The Flight 301 initially engages the battle with the F4U VMF 123 north of Kure base before all the devices are separated into small groups. After a bitter fight on the east coast of the island of Shikoku, the Lt. Kanno gathers his men to keep fighting. A few minutes later, two of the F4U VBF 10 piloted by Lt. Robert "Windy" Ensign Roy Hill and Erickson D fall on the "George" and the head of the U.S. patrol managed to shoot the device to jump Kanno parachute and passes so close to her pursuer he can see the details of his flight suit.
Kanno falls heavily in the course of a farm not far from the castle in Matsuyama, suffering burns to his hands and face. It was soon summoned to the farmer who takes in a first time for an American pilot, realizing soon realize his mistake when he heard the latter speak Japanese. Borrowing a bicycle, Kanno returned to its base pedaling as fast as he can.
On August 1, 1945, when he led his men met a formation of B-24 over the island of Yaku, one of his gun explodes due to a mechanical problem, causing a large hole in the wing. He then met with great difficulties to maintain its aircraft and his wingman, W / O Mitsuo Hori intends to stay with him for the cover on his return to the base. Kanno then ordered to attack the bombers and not care for him. Kanno runs but will never be found.

Genda worried, however many of his subordinates who looked oblivious to the danger and overestimating their own abilities. To sustain this point of view, the 301 Squadron which was responsible Kanno was the one who counted the greatest losses.
